26 wheelsets, or 26 inch diameter wheels are most commonly used on mountain bikes. The wheels are actually only 22 inches in diameter but with the tires they reach 26 inches. This size of wheel is ideal for mountain biking because it can handle a lot of varied terrain much easier than the road standard 29 inch wheel.
26 wheelsets are some of the easiest to find and come in a wide variety of configurations for different purposes and applications. They can have traditionally arranged spokes that connect to a hub, they can have composite spokes in various shapes as well as a number of other unique configurations.
Most 26 wheelsets have a smooth portion on the rim for the brakes to be applied although there are wheels made in this size specifically for disk brakes which have no polished rim designed for caliper and V-brakes. The angle of attack is lower than a 29er wheel, but this allows them to climb hills easier as well as making them lighter.
