Bar ends are commonly used mountain bike accessories. They are attached on the outside of the grips, and generally curve up and forward of the handlebars. They are relatively inexpensive but can be of tremendous benefit for nearly every rider.
Bar ends are most commonly used for climbing. They allow the rider to put additional weight on the front of the bike, allowing for better leverage on the pedals. They also give the rider another hand-placement option during regular riding, helping to relieve stress on the wrists.
Bar ends can also have some benefits that weren’t necessarily intended. For one, they can provide a degree of protection for the hands when riding in close quarters to trees and bushes. They can also help protect your expensive brake and shifting levers when the bike is turned upside down for changing tires.
