Bike Front Brakes

For most every bike, front brakes and rear brakes are standard. Each is controlled by its own lever on the handlebars, with the right lever operating the rear and the left lever working the front, in most cases. This has been the standard set up for decades.

When riding a bike, front brakes can be your best friend, or your worst enemy. The front brakes are the most effective for quick stopping, provided they are used properly and in conjunction with the rear brakes. Too much pressure on the front brake can lead to the bike flipping over and the rider being thrown.

For most ever bike, front brakes are of the caliper design, either center-pull or side pull. These are the traditional designs that apply the brake pad to the rim of the bicycle. There are, however, disc brake designs as well.
