Downhill mountain bikes
Downhill cycling is a time trial event where riders race down steep
(and often treacherous) courses. As the name implies, there is no climbing
involved; the momentum is gravity-based and riders travel at very high
speeds. Because of these demanding conditions, downhill mountain bikes
require disc brakes and full suspension.
Downhill mountain bikes have a geometry that leans back further and
more suspension travel than other bicycles (usually 8”-10”
of travel). Both of these features prevent riders from going over their
handlebars during steep sections of the course.
Disc brakes stop movement at the center of the wheel instead of the
rim. Due to the muddy nature of some courses, standard brakes (rim)
can become wet, ineffectual, and dangerous. Pneumatic disc brakes stop
heavy bikes even at high speeds and that’s why they’ve become
standard on downhill mountain bikes.
