When you hear someone talk about Giant bikes, they are referring to bikes made by the Taiwanese bicycle manufacturer called Giant, which claims to be the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world. Giant has facilities for production in Taiwan, China as well as the Netherlands.
Giant was started as early as 1972, when the company was called OEM. At this time, the company specifically manufactured bikes that would be sold under other names such as Schwinn. However, the company’s leadership changed in 1986, and established its own name and brand to compete with others.
Today, Giant bikes are sold in over 50 countries, in thousands of stores. The company has sold over five million bicycles and continues to grow. Giant mainly works in high-end bicycles, often specialized bikes.
Giant bikes put a lot of emphasis on finding the right bike for your build and purpose, rather than a general model. There are seven primary categories of Giant bikes: road, mountain, comfort, mode, indoor cycling, outdoor cycling, and specialized.
These categories are meant to give you a starting place if you know what kind of riding you want to do, but not what kind of bike is best for that riding. From these more general categories, the bikes become more particular. Giant mountain bikes, for example, are available in designs meant to fit all riding styles, from the casual, more or less level track, to specific downhill courses. Comfort bikes provide a range of bikes meant for city riding, and mode bikes are intended for youth—teenagers, in particular.
By making these categories, Giants emphasizes its philosophy that one bike is not necessarily as good as the next. Rather, finding the best bike for your specific purposes will depend on your build and what kind of riding you hope to accomplish. If you are very specific in these goals, Giant allows you to have a specialized bike designed more or less from square one. That way you can alter the design to fit you optimally and ride exactly how you want.
Giant continues to innovate today, and in 2006 introduced a high end bicycle frame made of carbon fiber which combined the seat post and frame together as just one unit. These bikes are made with an owner in mind, and a seat post that has been cut to fit that owner.
Giant also introduced the Maestro suspension system in that same year. This system is meant to provide for the rider an efficient rear suspension power transfer. These kinds of specialization options look to continue with Giant in the future.
