Giant is a global company based out of Newbury Park, California who specializes in making bikes. Bike is the shorthand version of the bipedal mechanically powered bicycle. Giant Mountain Bikes are produced in over 50 countries. Giant’s production lineup includes many different subsections which will be discussed in the followed paragraphs.
Some characteristics of mountain bikes are worth noting before an investigation into what Giant’s selection is. Mountain bikes are tactfully made for mountain biking which is generally referred to as any form of biking which is off a paved road and has the potential to introduce hazards, such as steep terrain, obstacles, washouts, or slick rock. Mountain biking has slowly evolved since the first produced mountain bike in the late 1960s into a sport that grew in popularity in Europe since the 1980s to 1990s. However, it was in the 1970s or 1980s that mainstream mountain bike production truly began which laid the foundation for the modern generation of Giant mountain bikes.
Mountain bikes are a major subset of Giant’s production lineup which includes a wide variety of bikes for all ages and sport levels from casual to extreme and covers the wide gamut in between. The major differentiating point in these production levels is the complexity of the bike and the price level. The breakdowns occur on the basis of gender and age, dividing between men, women, and youth. The youth subset is the smallest of the categories with a small selection of off-road, on-road, and BMX styles which are a reduced price in comparison to the more expensive adult bikes.
Giant mountain bikes are made in several specialized formats for both men and women. The styles are broken down into x-road and off road which are further subcategorized by performance, sport and lifestyle. The largest subset of Giant mountain bikes is the performance subcategory which is broken down one last time into competition, trail, all mountain, free ride, and performance hard tail. The delineation of hard or soft tail is made by the type of suspension on the rear of the bike. A soft tail bicycle has a shock absorber which will cushion impacts within the shock’s range. A hard tail bicycle has no rear shock absorber and will have a less forgiving impact with the ground. Regardless, most riders choose to stand on their pedals when jumping or surmounting difficult terrain in a stance that is similar to an active balls-of-your-feet stance in any other sport.
Bicycle disc breaks are a recent addition to the differentiation between bike types. Disc breaks are usually a metal disc that is attached to the wheel of the bicycle that rotates with the wheel. A set of calipers or another drag device is then mounted just around the disc brake that can be activated with a hydraulic or mechanical squeeze device. This recent addition to Giant mountain bikes is a preferable method to simple rim brakes.
The large number of choices available comprise the majority of differences which appear in appear in the Giant mountain bike lineup. Choices in frame style, level of shock absorption, both front and bike, tire width, seat type, break type, and handle bar type will come into play in deciding which of the Giant mountain bikes will fit the circumstances of the terrain.
