Latex Bike Tubes

Latex bike tubes were the preferred choice for cyclists prior to World War II. Latex is a natural occurring material that is harvested from trees, but during the war became a hard to find commodity. Because of this, many manufacturers began looking to synthetics for a solution.

Latex bike tubes have largely gone the way of the dinosaurs. Most modern inner tubes are made from butyl, which is a man-made rubber. Butyl is also less porous than latex, which means they need fewer bumps in air pressure.

Latex bike tubes do tend to be more lightweight than their butyl counterparts. However, because they are hard to find, most people do not use them. They are available through some cycling specialists, if you choose to try them.
