Every mountain biker knows that Shimano XTR mountain bike parts are the very lightest and best parts money can buy, but is it really worth all that extra money? XT parts are incredibly similar, often only lacking the dash of carbon fiber that can add over $150 to the original price, but are they really any more inferior than those top of the line parts or just slightly heavier?
In reality XT parts have more bang for their buck, but they don’t inspire the same trailside drool as an XTR derailleur. If you can’t afford to fork out the money for the top of the line parts, XT can definitely handle everything that can be dished out to it, sometimes better than the top of the line parts and they only add a few grams to the kit. There are better things to spend that money on than components, such as wheels, an often overlooked piece of equipment.
The wheel set is one of the most important mountain bike parts. It has to be perfectly true and round as well as incredibly strong. A cheap wheel doesn’t stay true for long and has a tendency to taco after high speed drops, something no one wants to experience. Components are great, but focus on the wheels first and get yourself a strong and light wheel set with good gears.
XTR parts are really not worth the extra money in most circumstances. If you are a wannabe professional rider with plenty of cash, go for it, but it won’t increase your credibility. Even down to the lowest end of the spectrum Deore line is incredibly smooth shifting, tough and easy to maintain although they are a bit heavier. A few grams isn’t going to shave off any time in a mountain biking race so go with what works and what you can afford.
Although Shimano has had a corner on the mountain bike parts market for some time, a dark horse has risen into the spotlight. SRAM, famous for their grip shifters which revolutionized shifting have released the X series of derailleur’s and shifters that rival anything from Shimano. From the bottom end X.3 to the highest end X.0 SRAM has made some great pieces of equipment that are built to handle the toughest terrain and are as light, or lighter than XTR while being much less expensive.
