Mountain Bikes

Mountain bikes are bicycles especially designed to ride on natural trails. They allow the rider to maintain control over even very rocky terrain. The main difference between mountain bikes and road bikes is in the tires. Mountain bikes feature thick tires, as well as shock absorption and front wheel suspension. This allows for better traction on off-road terrain. These tires also tend to be more rugged and resistant to flats.

While pretty much all mountain bikes have in common a similar type of tire and tire tread, the bikes can be divided into several different categories from there. There are downhill mountain bikes, cross country bikes, BMX, single-speed, cross-country bikes, and that’s just for starters. Most of these bikes are similar in that they are lightweight and have little suspension. Downhill and dirt jumping bikes, however, usually feature excellent suspension and are meant to be fast and durable.

To determine which type of bike is best for you, you will need to think about your overall budget as well as what you want to accomplish. Some bikes are better on certain types of terrain than others, so it is worth considering where you will be riding as well.

Generally, freeride and single-speed mountain bikes are not ideal for beginners. They require a honed skill and a certain level of physical fitness that not everyone will have. Sometimes these models are heavier than other models, and meant to combine different kinds of mountain biking with a more complex suspension system.

If you simply need a bike to take you around town, then you might be better served getting a road bike. However, if you will be traversing any kind of rocky, off-road terrain, you definitely want a mountain bike of some sort. From there, the best way to become familiar with the different kinds of bicycles is to simply practice. If you don’t have access to a bike to take for a test drive, it is never a bad idea to ask someone at your local bike shop for advice for first-timers. Furthermore, if you just want a mode of transportation up the canyon every other weekend, a standard, affordable mountain bike model should serve you just fine.

Most mountain bikes feature wheels of at least 26 inches. 26 is the standard number, though 29-inch wheels are becoming increasingly popular. Experienced riders might be interested in specializing and outfitting their own bikes—adding suspension forks, selecting specific types of tires, and even removing the seats, as many mountain bikers spend most of the ride standing. Some riders are also often interested in customization options that improve the style as well as the function of the bike.

Mountain bikes range in price from a few hundred dollars for a basic model to a few thousand for a customized, professional model that is meant to be used in competitions. For a beginning rider, however, a bike this advanced is probably not necessary. There are a wide variety of mountain bikes available, and some of them quite affordable. The important thing is to find a bike that you enjoy riding.
