Mountain bikes
Trail-riding is a fantastic way to escape the pollution and discourtesy
of city-riding, but road bicycles have thin frames and small wheels
that can’t navigate the technical obstacles of most trails. Mountain
bikes have certain components that make them sturdier and able to maneuver
through dirt, rocks and debris comfortably.
Common features of mountain bikes include:
• Thicker frame
• Deep-treaded, knobby tires
• Suspension (shocks)
• Disc brakes
The first mountain bikes had rigid frames which made navigating rocky
trails especially hard on riders’ arms. Since then, front-suspension
has become the norm for trail riding and rear-suspension is becoming
more popular with downhill riders (rear-suspension decreases power while
climbing).
