Mountain bike size
It’s tempting to buy a child a large bike, hoping that they will
grow into it–but a large bicycle is dangerous, especially when
the child cannot control it. Children require an appropriate mountain
bike size to remain safe on the trails.
After a kid graduates from training wheels, they should move up to
20” wheels and specific frame sizes. Mountain bike size does not
correspond to specific ages but rather comfort level. While seated,
a child’s leg should not be straight at the bottom part of the
rotation, but slightly crooked.
The correct mountain bike size for adults can be measured by standing
over the frame. While straddling the bar, there should be 3” of
space between the top tube and the rider. Riders also measure the inside
of their leg to the floor and then subtract 13” from the final
measurement–this gives the appropriate frame size.
