Off-road bikes are getting lighter and stronger everyday but the leader in low weight frames doesn’t come from the Mecca of mountain biking (Moab) but it does come from Utah, one of the best places to mountain bike in the world. The reason this bike is so unique is not because of any changes to the original design of a bike, it has the same double triangle frame configuration as most hard tail bikes, or the material used, carbon fiber is widely used in bicycle design in both on and off-road frames, but the way the carbon fiber is arranged.
The uniqueness in Delta 7 bicycles is their revolutionary IsoTruss system which weaves the carbon fiber into a 3D matrix that can be seen completely through. They look like a wireframe model of something that still needs to be rendered in AutoCAD or MAYA 3D software, but it’s actually much stiffer than regular methods of construction and insanely lighter than you would ever imagine. A mountain bike frame clocks in at less than 2.5 pounds and is still stiff enough for a track sprinter. This accomplishment is unheard of for any other manufacturer, but don’t expect to get one of these frames easily, there are only 200 made every year and they cost well over $7,000.
The great thing about the IsoTruss frame construction is that when one part gets damaged it does not affect the structural integrity of the rest of the frame. One tube frame construction a small dent can weaken the frame enough for it to buckle under enough force. This is not something that any mountain biker wants happening after a big jump, fast downhill, or hard turn. The basic principle behind the polygon construction which gives the frame so much strength has been used to hold up the pyramids in Egypt for thousands of years.
As pretty as the bike may be, it is not for the faint of heart. Even once you get past the 7k price on the frame you’ll have to equip it with comparably good components which could easily double the price. These are some of the stiffest bike frames on the market and can easily last for decades under the harshest riders. If you are in to racing or riding long cross country rides this could be the bike for you, if you can afford it.
For the more faint of heart there is a road version as well that comes in at an incredibly low 2.3 lbs. It has the same construction, materials and strength as the off-road version but is designed to accept road wheels and components.
Overall response for these off-road bikes has been enormously good, but the technology can be applied to a wide number of applications including light posts, cranes, automobiles and a wide range of other applications where weight is a factor.
