Road Bikes

While many people are very familiar with road bikes, most haven’t even heard of a cyclocross bike or know what it is used for. At first glance they look just like a regular road bike, but upon closer inspection a number of differences become notable, the first being the frame geometry, tires and clearance. On a cyclocross bike everything is a little bit more compact and tall allowing the crank to maneuver over larger obstacles without any trouble, remember, these bikes are for riding on trails just like a mountain bike but perform well on roads as well making them one of the more versatile and light bikes available. They are very popular among commuters, couriers, and hipsters.

The frame has to be much stiffer than a road frame but light weight is still strived for and expensive, exotic materials are often used, but steel and titanium offer a lower price point as well as much cushier ride and last longer than carbon fiber or aluminum frames. There is more clearance for the tires so knobbies can be incorporated without any scraping and easy mud clearing as well as a much higher bottom bracket as mentioned earlier.

The gearing on a cyclocross bike is also slightly different to accommodate steeper climbs and faster downhill rides. Single speed set ups are popular because of their mechanical simplicity, they won’t get clogged up no matter how muddy or snowy it is. The wheels are beefed up road wheels with knobby tires mounted on them. They run at a much lower pressure than road wheels to grip better and be more forgiving on bumps. Front suspension can be incorporated but most riders prefer the lightness of the rigid fork. Every rider has a slightly different set up with their own idiosyncratic additions, this is a fringe sport after all.

The position of the rider is different as well with most riders preferring a more upright position. Road bikers avoid this position and try to get as low and sleek as possible to avoid wind drag but this is not as much of a problem at the lower speeds of cyclocross. The handle bars are also mounted higher to give the rider a more commanding position somewhere in between a road bike stance and a mountain bike stance.

Honestly, these bikes are more for hard core biking aficionados and hipster commuters who ride them with single speeds. The average rider would much likely prefer a mountain bike for riding on trails and a separate road bike for riding on roads.
