Single Speed Mountain Bike

A single speed mountain bike has fewer moving parts and is less likely to need a trailside repair than a multi-speed bike. The single speed allows the bike to simplify its overall scheme, from the handlebars down to the pedals. You don’t need a shifter, or a derailer, the chain can actually be covered by a chain cover as well. This allows for a more aggressive riding stance if the chain cover is utilized.

A single speed mountain bike is generally recommended for trails that have little or no climb to them. The gear ratio for a single speed will vary by model, but they are rarely suitable for anything more than accelerating downhill, or keeping pace over level terrain. The light weight of a single speed also allows for greater maneuverability.

Another area in which a single speed mountain bike excels is in trick riding. Much like a BMX bike, a single speed mountain bike gives a rider a constant pedal resistance to work from, and a more balanced weight distribution as well. When performing tricks like a stall or a wheelie, the balance of the bike is the key to success, having a bike without bulky cogs on the rear wheel and pedals lightens the bike, providing for a more easily controllable platform to work from.
